We all get enthusiastic about working on a new sewing project - from the initial task of picking the fabrics to sewing the last seam or hem, sometimes it's incredibly easy to simply forget that along with choosing your materials, there are many Haberdashery items that are essential pieces of kit in anyone's sewing box. These various tools help to make our hobby a much easier and enjoyable process! In today's blog, I'll be talking about some of our Haberdashery items that I personally can't do without. If you have any favourite items of your own, be sure to let us know through our Facebook page! Gutermann Sew-All Thread – My favourite brand and type of thread, this comes in an enormous amount of colours; whatever fabric you are sewing, you are bound to find its perfect colour match in the Gutermann Sew-All Thread reels. The smallest size is a 100 metre reel, but certain shades have bigger sizes available going all the way up to 1000 metres. These larger reels are also more economical as they work out cheaper in the long run. Scissors – Don't ever use scissors on your fabric that weren't made especially for dressmaking! It is important to have a decent pair to ensure your cutting is smooth and won't tear your fabric up. We always recommend scissors from our Fiskars range for dressmaking; all of our staff members use these scissors in both of our stores, and they are also available in both right- and left-handed pairs. Elastic – This item is fantastic for using in easy-to-wear garments such as pyjamas and loungewear, as well as dresses that would look that much better with a gathered waist. I personally like to use it in the cuffs of sleeves that I have designed to be floaty and gathered at the wrist. It is also a popular choice among our customers for ballet shoes and hair bobbles. Quick Un-Pick – No one enjoys having to remove a seam that they have mis-stitched, but a quick un-pick (also known as a stitch ripper/seam ripper) is a handy tool to easily undo stitches and try again. We recommend that special care is taken when using one of these on sheer and/or thin fabrics. Snap Fasteners – These fasteners are so easy to use both when adding them to a garment and when wearing the finished product. They are also recommended for people who may have dexterity problems, as they close simply by pushing the two halves together and are less fiddly than a zip or a button. Do you have any recommendations of your own for Haberdashery items? Is there one item that you just can’t do without? Let us know on our Facebook page – we love hearing back from our customers!
