When you think of Haberdashery and sewing you may not automatically think of pens and markers but it can be a sewing box essential item and there are a number of different dressmaking markers available for different projects. They can be used for dressmaking, quilting, embroidery and household uses. The traditional type of marker you may find in the Haberdashery department is tailor's chalk. This is typically found in chalk triangles and can be used for marking out patterns. Recently this has been manufactured in pencil form and can be found in blue and white so that you can mark different coloured fabric and still see the marking. The marks made by tailor's chalk can be easily wiped off with a damp cloth however it is always essential that you test this out on a sample piece of fabric. One of the biggest names in Haberdashery is Prym and they have large selection of marking pens which can be used for all dressmaking and quilting projects. Many of these are self erasable and any guidelines that have been drawn on your fabric will become invisible in a few days. The speed of this will depend on what fabric is being used. The pens that are not self erasable, in Prym's Haberdashery selection, are water erasable and like the tailor's chalk can be removed with a damp cloth and gentle rubbing. If you are looking for a more permanent mark on your fabric, Prym also have a laundry marker pen which is black in colour and will not wash off from your fabric. This is ideal for creating name labels for children's school clothing or book bags.
