With a New Year comes a New Year's resolution for a lot of people, and in the past week we have had a number of customers visiting us who have vowed to take up sewing as a hobby and are looking for some advice on where to start. It is always a good idea to have a selection of Haberdashery items available to hand when tackling a sewing project of any kind, so in today's blog we'll be talking about a few Haberdashery tools that we think are essential pieces of kit in anyone's sewing box. If you have any of your own recommendations, be sure to let us know through our Facebook page! Gutermann Sew-All Thread – My personal favourite brand and type of thread, these come in an incredible amount of shades; whatever fabric you are sewing, you are bound to find its perfect colour match in the Gutermann Sew-All Thread reels. The smallest size is a 100 metre reel, but certain shades have bigger sizes available going all the way up to 1000 metres. These larger reels are also more economical price-wise, as they work out cheaper in the long run. Moon Threads - Another top choice of mine, these threads are a great economical choice if you are looking for quality thread but are hoping to save a little money when purchasing. There is a great range of colours available and with 1000 metres per reel, they are bound to see you through an entire dressmaking project. We also have a selection of colours available from the Moon range in overlocking cones as well. Scissors – It is so important to use the correct type of scissors on your fabric; don't ever be tempted to use scissors that weren't especially made for dressmaking as you will not achieve a smooth cut and, in a worst case scenario, could end up damaging your fabric beyond repair. We always recommend scissors from our Fiskars range - these are what our staff use in both of our stores, and are available in both right- and left-handed variations. There are also special types such as spring-loaded and soft-grip for those who may struggle with arthritis and other hand conditions. Elastic – This item is the right choice for using in easy-to-wear garments such as pyjamas and loungewear, as well as dresses that would look that require a gathered waist. I personally like to use it in the cuffs of sleeves that I have designed to be floaty and gathered at the wrist. It is also a popular choice among our customers for ballet shoes and hair bobbles. Quick Un-Pick – Also known as a stitch ripper or seam ripper, a quick un-pick is a handy tool for easily taking apart stitches and seams. There is no need to use your smallest scissors to take apart your mis-stitched lines any longer! Please make sure to take special care when using a quick un-pick on sheer and/or thin fabrics.
