Here at Calico Laine we stock an excellent selection of Haberdashery for all your sewing needs. Whether you’re a professional or beginner we have it covered. I love to sew, I’m certainly no expert, I primarily make clothes for my children but there a few essentials I couldn’t live without. For those of you who sew regularly then you’ll have heard of Prym, this company is the international market leader in producing haberdashery. All their products are excellent quality and I’d always recommend their goods.

Buying the correct pins

It might seem trivial but it’s so important to have the right pins when you’re sewing. Like most things in life you get what you pay for with pins so it’s worth paying a little extra to get pins which don’t bend or rust. My haberdashery box contains 2 different kinds of pins; firstly I have the Prym quilting pins. These are longer than your regular pins so they are useful if you’re doing bulky coat zip alternations or if you’re working with several layers of fleece or other heavy fabrics. Obviously they’re also ideal for quilting too!! Secondly I always have plenty of the Prym glass headed pins, there are useful because you can iron over them without them melting. Perfect for ironing hems flat before sewing!!

There are many haberdashery items which come highly recommended but since we’re on the subject of pins then there are 2 other essentials which I personally used all the time. The first one is a finger pin cushion. This is like a miniature pin cushion which just wraps around your fingers enabling you to concentrate on fiddly jobs father than having to search for your pin box every few seconds. The other item I love is also my most recent purchase. A few weeks back I bought a Prym magnetic pin cushion. This item has revolutionised my sewing room. I am terrible for leaving a trail of pins everywhere so this simple magnet really helps keep my work area neat and tidy.

I hope this blog has given you some further insights to the world of haberdashery. Happy sewing!
