This week we have experienced a number of Mum's coming into our store looking for fabric and Haberdashery to make their children costumes for world book day. World book day usually takes place each year to encourage kids to read and they are usually asked by their schools or nurseries to dress up as a character from a book; although we have had a few suspect costumes from superheroes to Star Wars characters which I'm not sure are strictly storybook characters. The majority of customers who are making costumes need to make their projects quickly as they are often told last minute from school that they need to have a costume ready in a few days. This means that a lot of people do not want to sew their costumes and therefore are looking for Haberdashery items that can help them with this. We often suggest people use hemming tape for certain parts of their costume instead of sewing as it is a quick and easy way to attach fabric together; which will hold well enough for a few wears. Hemming tape is available in a branded and non branded version with many people choosing Wunderweb, the branded version, as this is a better quality product and still value for money. This tape is an iron on tape which will fuse two fabrics together and is clear when ironed so it will not show. Another Haberdashery item that can be useful when making a costume is velcro. This is particularly handy for creating openings in trousers or skirts without the use of a zip which will be sufficient enough for a costume that is only to be worn once. Velcro is available in black and white in a number of different widths and available in sew on or stick on however for clothing we usually suggest the sew on version. If you have made a costume for world book day why not post a picture on our Facebook as we would love to see.
