Why not get a little bit more creative whilst making your blanket Christmas presents this year?! You may be using our Fleece Fabric annually to make beautifully soft gifts for friends and family members, but have you ever thought how to make it more special than just a rectangle with some blanket stitches going around the edge? From a very early age I have loved Disney films and wanted to be one of the Princesses. My all time favourite, like a lot of other people out there is Ariel! She is just amazing... considering she is part fish! Lets not deny that at some point in your life when you've been swimming you've pretended to be a mermaid, it just makes us feel so free! So why do we have to leave feeling like a mermaid at the side of the pool? Yes, that's right we don't! To create my mermaid fleece blanket all I did was buy 1.5 metres of fleece, in my chosen colour, which was to be used for the main tail. I then decided to use 0.5 metres of our Melton fabric for the fins, this is because it is a slightly more rigid material and would hold up better. Because Ariel's tail is all green and wears purple clams, I chose to use our jade Fleece Fabric for the tail and used the purple Melton fabric for the fins. Once you have the materials to create this fantastic blanket, all I did was sat on the Fleece Fabric and drew around my hips and legs, into a triangular tail shape, adding an extra inch for seem allowance, folded the fleece in half and cut the shape out, so I was left with two triangular pieces. Next I folded the Melton in half and drew the basic shape of fins and cut these out, again being left with two. Then repeating this so I could double the fins up, to make them extra firm. Now, sew up the fins and turn inside out so you cant see the seem. Lastly, turn the fleece inside out and sew the two lengths that run down your leg, with the fins in place facing inwards so that once its done and you turn it the right way the fins will be on the outside. It is that simple! So if you have a mother, daughter, sister, grandmother or friend that also wants to be an underwater princess why not give this a go and post your finished product onto our Facebook page? We'd love to see it!
