My favourite section of our Haberdashery department is definitely our lovely colourful ribbons. I’ve no idea where my obsession stems from but with so many pretty colours to choose from there is always something to suit whatever you’re making ready for the summer. This month in particular has given me plenty of reasons to stock up on my favourite ribbons. I have lots of birthdays to celebrate which means I need plenty of ribbons to wrap with, make cards with and of course decorate the birthday cakes. There’s nothing nicer than a birthday cake finished off with beautiful ribbons. I’m certainly no expert baker so rely on the ribbons to make my cakes looks wonderful! Last week I made my niece a cake which I finished off with a bow made from our large pink polka dot ribbon. With the left over ribbons I made her some hair bobbles which seem to be all the fashion in her school lately. I also found some white satin flowers in my Haberdashery stash with matching ribbon. They looked great made into hair accessories. I’ve never attempted these bobbles before but they’re so easy to make, I’m on a roll now. To be honest, I think I just enjoy having a reason to buy more ribbon and picking colours which I think look nice together. Recently I was inspired to make some jars of jam as wedding favours for my wedding reception. In fact I ended up making over 100 jars! With a little help from my Haberdashery box the jars looked fabulous. I cut 6” squares of fabric for the lids, secured them with an elastic band then added a gorgeous ribbon with a bow to finish them off. I was delighted with how they turned out. I can’t wait for the strawberries to ripen in the garden so I can make more! I believe that a small gift like a jar of jam or a homemade cake can be greatly appreciated if presented correctly. It’s amazing how a small cheap piece of ribbon can make something ordinary into something fantastic. I couldn’t live without my wonderful overflowing box of Haberdashery.
