One of the most popular types of Dressmaking Fabric that we sell here at Calico Laine is Satin – and with so many different kinds and colours to choose from, it’s hardly surprising. Satin Fabrics have always been regarded as lustrous and luxurious, and was the first choice Fabric for 14th century England royal courts. Today, they are still considered to be the same – Satin is always a popular choice for formal events and garments such as weddings, bridal and bridesmaid gowns and prom dresses. Its use is not just limited to Dressmaking either – it is also a favourite of our customers who are looking to make soft furnishing items such as cushions and luxury bedding. In today’s blog, we’ll be talking about some of the different types of Satin Fabrics we stock and some of their properties, and hopefully aid you in making the right choice for your own Dressmaking projects. Duchess Satin – Perhaps our most popular Satin, this beautiful Fabric has a heavy weight to it and is a favourite of brides-to-be looking for ideas for their gown and bridesmaid dresses. Our Duchess Satin comes in 36 different colours at 150cm wide and is 100% polyester, and features a fantastic subtle shine that looks absolutely amazing when made up. Super Soft Duchess Satin – If you are after the feel and look of Duchess Satin but perhaps not the weight, then our 100& polyester Super Soft Duchess Satin is the Fabric for you. Whilst still retaining the gorgeous understated shine of our regular Duchess Satin, this Fabric has a softer feel and drapes beautifully. Traditional bridal colours are available in this Fabric as well as some brighter shades for that eye-catching garment. Economy Satin – If you want Satin for your Dressmaking project but don’t have the budget to buy some of the more expensive choices, then take a look at our 100% polyester Economy Satin. This lightweight Satin is affordable and comes in many different colours, and is a popular choice for fancy dress, formal outfits and even lining in jackets. Stretch Satin – For garments with an extra bit of comfort, we recommend our Stretch Satin. This beautiful Fabric is similar to our regular Duchess Satin, but it is composed of 97% polyester and 3% lycra, meaning it has a little bit of stretch. This makes it the perfect choice for fitted formal garments that need to be comfortable when worn. Have you used any of these Satin Fabrics in your own Dressmaking projects?
