If you are looking forward to the British summertime weather (which we seem to have had very little of so far!), you might be wanting your sewing projects to start reflecting that - with the bright sunshine come light and breathable Dressmaking Fabrics, summer dresses and clothing to keep you cool in the warmth. As I am off to the USA in a few weeks for the majority of the summer, I have made myself some clothes in preparation; I know from past experience that nothing beats down on you quite like the Florida heat! In today's blog, I'll be covering some of the Dressmaking Fabrics that I have been using for my own summer clothing in the hope that you might feel inspired to try some of them with your own sewing projects. Cotton Spandex Plain - These Dressmaking Fabrics are wonderful to work with and if you want something easy to wear, the slight stretch present in this ensures a comfortable fit for whatever you are doing. I am currently making a pair of high-waisted shorts out of our Wine Cotton Spandex Plain, and I will probably making some more using different colours because I am very happy with them so far. It is also a great Dressmaking Fabric to use if you have a formal event to go to this summer but are looking for an alternative to polyester Fabrics such as satin. Cotton Prints - If you are after something eye-catching, then our Cotton Print Dressmaking Fabrics are recommended. Our 100% Cotton Poplin prints include florals, abstract and a whole host of children's prints, and they are always in demand for summer dresses and skirts. I have been making a dipped hem dress with godets in the skirt out of one of our floral prints, and I am very happy with my progress so far! Linen - Our Blades Linen is a popular Dressmaking Fabric all year round for both clothing and soft furnishing, but it is an especially great choice in the summertime for trousers and shorts. Our linen is a cotton/linen mix, which ensures that it is a breathable Fabric and keeps you cool in the heat. We have a fantastic colour range available so whatever shades you want to choose for your summer wardrobe, there will be at least one to suit your tastes. Microfibre - This Dressmaking Fabric is great to use for dresses (I have personally used it for a few skater dresses and skirts) that require a little bit of formality. It is a polyester Fabric, but the beautiful drape of it helps it to feel great against the skin when worn. It would also be wonderful to use for an evening jacket or a bolero which would keep you at a comfortable temperature when the cooler evening rolls in. Have you used any of these Fabrics in your own Dressmaking projects? Do you have any other favourite Fabrics to use for your summer sewing ideas?
