This morning has been chaotic on the roads as we have seen the first bit of snow of the season on the Wirral. The sun may be shining but there is definitely a chill in the air and my hands are like icicles as I write this post! What we could all  do with is some beautifully warm Dressmaking Fabric to create a cosy winter outfit. At Calico Laine we a stunning collection of winter fabric which would do just the trick! We have a large selection of winter Dressmaking Fabric both online and in store that are sure to keep you toasty and warm with their heavier weight and high insulation. One of the most popular winter weight Dressmaking Fabrics that we offer is melton. Named after the town Melton Mowbray, melton is usually a closely woven woollen fabric with a short, dense pile to it. It has a similar feel and weight to boiled wool and is popular for making jackets and coats for the cold weather. The melton in our winter fabric range has a composition of 80% polyester and 20% viscose however it still feels similar to a wool. It is perfect for creating your winter coat but can also be used for making hats and scarves to keep you nice and cosy. My favourite colour in the melton range has to be the red as it is a gorgeous rich colour and very apt for the winter season. It is a nice change from the usual black coats that I wear. Another range in our winter Dressmaking Fabrics is tartan fabric. Tartan is popular throughout the year but especially so when the weather becomes a bit cooler. There are a large amount of colours to choose from including the traditional reds, greens, black and white and the more unusual purple, pinks and turquoise. These are brilliant for making full winter skirts and dresses and can even be made into smart jackets for underneath an overcoat. The majority of the tartans in our range are made from polyster and viscose however there are a few in the range that have a percentage of wool in their fibre content and this will keep you extra warm. As well as tartan fabrics, we also stock some winter checks and these again, can be made into skirts, dresses and even trousers if you are feeling particularly brave in your style choices! With winter truly here, now is the time to buy your winter Dressmaking Fabric and get started on the sewing machine!
