In recent years, Lace has experienced resurgence as a Bridal Fabric with it's leap in popularity being largely attributed to the stunning Sarah Burton for McQueen gown worn by Catherine Middleton for her 2011 nuptials to Prince William. However in reality, Lace has been one of the most popular Bridal Fabrics for decades. Lace first rose to prominence as a Bridal Fabric when Queen Victoria wore a white, lace trim gown for her elaborate wedding to Prince Albert of Germany. The Honiton Lace chosen by Victoria perfectly complimented the heavy silk satin Fabric of her gown and provided a huge boost to the lace-making industry which was desperately needed at the time and the stunning gown kick-started the big white dress tradition that has stood the test of time. Although netted Fabrics have been around since primordial times, Lace as we know it is understood to have arisen sometime in the 15th Century and was first brought to the shores of Britain around 200 years later by Protestant refugees fleeing the continent. By the time of the Renaissance, Lace had become on of the most prominent Fabrics in fashion. Lace is one of the most intricate and beautiful Bridal Fabrics available today and is distinguishable by it's open hole design which is often made by hand; it can take months to produce just one metre of hand crafted Lace. It is also possible to produce Lace by machine and this is often the chosen procedure for mass produced Lace, resulting in a more cost effective material. In 1956 Hollywood star Grace Kelly wore what is possibly the most famous and lauded Lace bridal gown of all time when she tied the knot with Prince Albert of Monaco. The intricate gown designed by Helen Rose of MGM Studios was the epitome of femininity and romance and instantly transformed the Queen of Hollywood into real life royalty. Princess Grace's ivory gown featured a fitted lace bodice and a bell shaped skirt of satin Bridal Fabric, brought together by a pleated waist which emphasised the Princess' hourglass shape. The intricate design was an extremely complex structure which featured another bodice underneath and three layers of integrated petticoats which gave the skirt it's enormous volume and structure. Almost 60 years later the gown is still considered to be one of the most important and inspiring creations in fashion history and was said to have been the inspiration for the McQueen design worn by Duchess Catherine on her own wedding day. Fashion house Marchesa unveiled it's 2015 collection at New York Bridal week showcasing a variety of Princess Grace inspired designs. Romantic Nicole went the extra mile by having her and her husbands names embroidered into the Lace sleeve of her gown as a lasting memento of their day. American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson wore an incredible long sleeved Temperley gown of Lace Bridal Fabric for her 2013 ceremony. The romantic, ethereal vibe Kelly chose for her autumn wedding was completed by hare loosely styled hair which was pulled back into a loose chignon and decorated with a stunning Maria Elena hairpiece which was simple enough to keep the focus on her stunning dress. Kelly's vibrant bouquet was in keeping with the autumn theme and featured sunflowers and bluebonnets (the official flower of Kelly's home state, Texas) and the resulting look was so stunningly effective that Kelly has become widely renowned as one of the best dressed brides of all time.
