Many of our staff members at calico laine are keen dressmakers and Buy Haberdashery from the store for all their sewing needs. I however do not do as much sewing as I probably could and instead like to use haberdashery in a different way. I am a keen jewellery maker and Buy Haberdashery for making jewellery and accessories. Self cover buttons can be used as centre pieces for textiles brooches, as pendants or even earrings. They are available in a number of different sizes making them great for all kinds of jewellery projects. They can be covered in a multitude of fabrics to create all different designs which can be used to match your outfits. Self cover buttons are available in metal and nylon however when I Buy Haberdashery I always choose to work with the metal version as these are better for jewellery items, especially if you are adding earring posts which can be attached using E6000 glue. When using self cover buttons I always opt for using the self cover button tool as an aid to help me cover the buttons. On the back of the tool packaging is a handy size guide to show you how big you need to cut your fabric for each size of button. This is extremely useful as this way you do not waste any fabric and you will always have the perfect size cut out. The tool comes in two parts, one rubber side and one plastic side which is separated into different circles for the different size buttons. Firstly you need to cut out your fabric to size using the template and lay this in the correct size hole in the rubber side of the tool. Next, place your button, front side down and carefully fold in your fabric so that it is held in the small grips on the back of the button. Once this is done place the flat part of your button over the fabric and place the plastic side of the tool over the two button parts. Push this firmly and it should push the two pieces together to complete the button. So next time you Buy Haberdashery why not think out of the box and try some new projects for making your own accessories and jewellery.
