This week sees the very first national beading week sponsored by the beadworkers guild and many people around the country are holding events to join in with the celebrations. The guild say that this is a time to celebrate our passion for beads, to encourage others to start beading and to support bead businesses around the country'. Out of all of the Crafts we stock items for at Calico Laine, beading has to be my favourite and as a jewellery maker myself I love to use all different types of beads in my work. One of the ideas that the beadworkers guild have for national beading week is called bead bombing. Many of you may have heard of the term 'yarn bombing' which is popular with fans of woollen Crafts, knitting and crocheting. Knitters decorate their community by knitting around benches, street lamps and trees to create colourful displays of street art. The same idea can be done with beads and the guild are encouraging beaders to create bead chains and beaded chain links, similar to paper chains, to decorate community halls or local beading shops. These can be made with all different kinds of beads however the bead chain links work best with seed beads. Here at Calico Laine we stock a range of jewellery beads and beading accessories which can all be found in our Crafts section online. We stock glass beads which would be perfect for creating your own jewellery as well as stocking wooden beads which are ideal for Crafts with the kids as these are easy to thread. If you have never made jewellery before why not take a look at our jewellery section as give it a go to join in with National Beading Week.
