This week we have received a number of deliveries featuring new Dress Fabrics. It is always quite exciting to get new material and customers love to see what new additions we have in stock through our website and Facebook page. This week, one of the most interesting fabrics that have been added to our velvet range are extra heavy crushed velvet and velveteen Dress Fabrics. Velvet is a 'woven tufted' Dress Fabric which is created on a loom that weaves two thicknesses of the fabric simultaneously. These two pieces are then cut away from each other, with the two lengths of material wound on two take-up rolls. The cut threads are then evenly distributed across the fabric to create a short dense pile. Velvet's pile gives it a distinctive feel and is usually very smooth to the touch. It can be created using both natural or synthetic fibres and is usually a fairly expensive Dress Fabric to buy due to the manufacturing costs hence why it is usually seen as a luxury fabric. Extra heavy crushed velvet is one of the new Dress Fabrics we have added to our stock this week. This type of velvet is unlike the traditional velvet and is actually a knitted fabric rather than we woven but still has a short dense pile giving it, its characteristic texture. This fabric is created by mechanically twisting and crushing the material while it is still wet which produces a patterned appearance. The extra heavy crushed velvet that has been added to our range is a heavier weight to our standard crushed velvet and is available in four colours. This Dress Fabric is great for creating theatre costumes and for soft furnishings such as throws and cushions. Another one of our Dress Fabrics, recently added to our range, is velveteen, am imitation velvet. Velvet fabric is created by warp yarns whereas velveteen is created using weft yarns. As with most velveteen fabrics, ours is made from 100% cotton fibres and has a short pile while is closely set. It has a matte finish to it rather than the sheen of velvet however it is a more hardwearing fabric. Again, this fabric can be used for home soft furnishings and clothing. Available in 6 different colours, a width of 145cm and with a price tag of £9.99 per metre, this is a great value for money Dress Fabric and a great alternative to some of the more expensive velvet fabrics on the market.
