While fabrics are a given part of any dressmaking project, people often forget that there are lots of Haberdashery tools that are almost essential pieces of kit in anyone’s sewing box. Where would we be without numerous reels of thread, or a trusty needle when you want to add some embroidery to a garment? In today’s blog, I’ll be talking about some Haberdashery items which I think should be included in anyone’s sewing supplies. If you have any favourites of your own, make sure to let us know through our Facebook page! I have at least three in my own sewing kit! Take special care when using this on thin and/or sheer fabrics. Snap Fasteners – Missing a button on a garment? Is your cardigan not closing properly? No problem – try using a few snap fasteners to easily fix fastenings on your clothing. One of my favourite tricks is to use them hidden away underneath a decorative button (because sewing button holes on my machine is somewhat of a nightmare). Elastic – This item is great for using in easy-to-wear garments such as pyjamas and loungewear, as well as summer dresses that would look that much better with a gathered waist. I also like to use it in the cuffs of sleeves that I have designed to be floaty and gathered at the wrist. A number of colours are also available in bigger reel sizes, which work out cheaper in the long run. Scissors – To cut fabric properly, you need a decent pair of scissors made especially for dressmaking. We always recommend scissors from our Fiskars range – we use these ourselves in both of our stores, and they are available in both right- and left-handed pairs.
