Many of our customers ask our opinion on which are the best scissors on the market and many like us to compare the Fiskars versus Janome Scissors to determine which is best for their use. Fiskars and Janome are both great quality brands and manufacture high quality scissors. Choosing the right pair of scissors for your project is essential as a poor pair of scissors can ruin your dressmaking project if they are not suitable for the job or poor quality. The preferred choice of scissors here at Calico Laine for all our fabric cutting is the 25cm fiskars dressmaking scissors and those of us who are left handed use the 21cm left handed dressmaking shears. These are excellent quality and have a lifetime guarantee from the manufacturers giving you piece of mind that if anything happens they will replace them for you. Their sharp blades slide through light fabrics easily and make cutting heavier fabrics much less of a chore. Their curved handles give them a comfortable fit and are ideal if you are cutting a large amount of fabric. Another reason I prefer to use Fiskars versus Janome Scissors is that they have a scissor sharpener in their range which is angled to the correct angle on the fishers scissors blade. This means that if over time the blades do become blunt or get a 'nick' in them from cutting something I shouldn't, I can sharpen them and make them like brand new again. When it comes to pinking shears, it is always important to pick a high quality pair if they are going to be used regularly as these cannot be sharpened. Once again, I would pick the 23cm fiskars pinking shears ahead of the Janome shears and these are the ones I use at both work and home. These are easy to cut with and give a good sharp, clean cut whereas with some of the cheaper pinking shears it can be difficult to cut lighter fabrics.
