In today's blog we'll be talking about Georgette Fabric and its uses as a dressmaking material. Georgette is traditionally made from silk, and now modern georgette is mostly made of synthetic fibres such as polyester. Georgette fabric is very closely related to the lighter chiffon material.  However, unlike chiffon, it is a lot springier and has more strength.  It is a sheer fabric that is light-weight, with a crinkly crepe-light texture.  This crinkly texture is due to the threads in the fabric being highly twisted.  It has a flowing, bouncy look which is a popular choice in women's fashions as it is strong, thin and light, yet it can be layered and gathered without becoming bulky. Georgette fabric has many different uses in Dressmaking, and is often used in making evening gowns, bridal gowns and many other types of formal wear.  It is also used for making other items of clothing like shirts, blouses and jackets, usually for women.  If items of clothing are ever decorated, it is best to keep the decoration simple so as not to weigh the material down.  Georgette fabric can be dyed many differeent colours, and can also be coloured into various different patterns. Here at Calico Laine, we have a range of thirteen different colours of georgette fabrics.  The 'White/Pink crepe georgette' and the 'White/Mauves crepe georgette' are the two patterns available and our plain coloured georgettes range from white and cream, to red, turquoise and black.  All Georgette Fabrics at Calico Laine have a soft handle and drape well.  Our plain range is 100% polyester, 140 cm wide and originates from Japan.  Our patterned crepe georgettes are 100% polyester, 150 cm wide and also originate from Japan.
