I first remember becoming familiar with the word haberdasher whilst reading Chaucers' Canterbury Tales during my school days. Traditionally, as in Chaucer's masterpiece, a haberdasher was a peddler who would sell small articles for making clothes like buttons, threads and zips and the word haberdashery came to be an all encompassing term for small items used in sewing and dressmaking. Since then, haberdashery has become big business with many companies carrying enormous ranges of buttons, threads and zips to sell alongside stunning varieties of fabrics. As a child, I remember rooting through the haberdashery sections of big department stores to unearth all manner of treasures such as a cute button or a pretty spool of thread. Here at Calico Laine, we are still as passionate about haberdashery as we ever were. Not only is haberdashery a luxury, it is a necessity when sewing and creating masterpieces. Whether you are a professional dressmaker or a hobby seamstress, it is vital to ensure that you select the appropriate item of haberdashery in order to achieve the most professional looking finished projects.
