One of the most important Haberdashery tools in any dressmaker's sewing kit is a good pair of scissors. Available in so many different types, lengths and sizes, it is paramount to choose the correct pair for the job, whether it be to cut fabric, perform needlework or cut edges so that they don't fray as easily. Scissors are believed to have been invented by the ancient Egyptians in 1500 BC, with the earliest pair ever recorded originating in Mesopotamia. This pair consisted of a pair of blades crafted from bronze, joined together by another flexible strip of bronze that allowed the user to push and pull the blades together and apart. As for the first version ever of the well known modern scissors, these were created by the Romans somewhere around 100AD. The Romans chose to craft their scissors from either bronze or iron, using a pivot point between the handles and the tips of the blades instead of the Egyptians' idea of the strip between two blades. From then on, scissors became common-place in countries such as China, Japan and Korea, before eventually spreading to the rest of the world. Finally, In 1649, an ironworks was established in the village of Fiskars in Finland, and 181 years later a new owner started to produce, amongst other items, scissors branded with the Fiskars logo and trademark. These Fiskars scissors are the same products that a lot of dressmakers favour today, including our own staff in both of our Calico Laine stores! We also stock pinking shears which are the perfect choice for crafts such as quilting, and they are also popular amongst our customers who like to create bunting - pinking shears cut fabric in a zigzag pattern, minimising and slowing the rate of the fabric fraying away. For those of us who are left-handed (including myself!), we also stock a variety of left-handed scissors that have reversed blades, allowing us to see the cutting line without awkwardly leaning over to the side that right-handed scissors hide from our view. Do you have a favoured scissor brand at all? Are you unsure of which pair of scissors is right for the job you want to use them for?
