Sewing is a skill and it can take many years to master it so that your craft and dressmaking projects look precise and tidy. To give your sewing a more professional look, you want to create a neat edge to your seams and this can sometimes be tricky. Bias binding is a useful Haberdashery item to use to cover your exposed seams to create a neat edge which in turn will help you create a well finished product. Bias binding has a slight stretch to it due to the fact that it has been cut across the bias of a fabric and this allows you manipulate the tape around corners to give you the perfect finish on your garments and crafts. Bias Binding is a fully washable Haberdashery item which is important when you are attaching it to clothing. As well as using it for dressmaking, bias can be used on upholstery and soft furnishing to eliminate raw edges or just to provide a decorative edge. One of the most popular bias tapes for achieving a decorative edge is our printed bias binding which comes in gingham, animal print and floral patterns. This binding is available in a 25mm width and can be purchased by the full roll or by the metre depending on your requirements. Printed bias looks particularly effective when it is used to trim plain fabric as it adds some interest to the edge with a bit of pattern. Our most popular bias bindings with dressmakers are our cotton and polycotton bias tapes. The cotton version has more of an open weave to it and is pre washed so that it will not shrink when washed whereas the polycotton version has a tighter weave and is softer to the touch. Both versions are available in 16mm and 25mm widths and can be bought both by the metre or by the full roll. If you are working with satin fabrics the best bias to use from our Haberdashery range is our satin bias binding which will give you a similar satin texture as the satin fabric you are using to create your garment. Made from 100% polyester, the satin bias tape is 19mm and is folded on either edge so that when it is applied it will be roughly 10mm on each side of your fabric. Satin bias is available in 20 different colours and can be used to create an elegant finish on your project.
